Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
