Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
